Another perfect day for rugby, and this time it was a whole squad away day down at Old Elthamians RFC, who like ourselves are blessed with good numbers and are able to field 2 x teams. Being a local derby, there was plenty of inter school and friendship rivalries across the two squads, with the social media banter, that had been going on for a number of months, only adding to the feeling that these games were less 2 x friendlies and more 2 x test matches !
With only 1 x pitch available it felt like a real inclusive day, with all coaches, players and parents, having the rare luxury of being able to watch both matches, that were played consecutively.
The first game saw a Sidcup 2XV play an Eltham 2XV. Eltham set their stall out early using their big athletic backs to good effect, but the Sidcup defence held strong and a couple of counter attacks saw us score 2 x quick tries. To their credit this did not deter Eltham, who continued the pressure, this time with more success and at half time the score was 12 : 10 to Sidcup. The second half began as the first one with fantastic defence from Sidcup denying Eltham a further foothold, and as the game began to open up, our defence turned into attack with 4 more tries being scored by Sidcup and 1 by Eltham with the match finishing 38 : 15 to Sidcup.
The second match was a 1XV affair, which followed a similar pattern to the earlier match with Eltham attacking hard and fast but meeting strong defence, with both forwards and backs holding their ground to deny Eltham a score. 2 tries from Sidcup saw the half time score at 12 : 0 . The second half saw Sidcup score a further 6 tries against a tiring Eltham side, who, despite the Sidcup pressure and dominance, continued to attack leading to 2 tries of their own, making the final score 50 : 14 .
Save for a bit of “handbags” late on in the second game, both matches were generally played in good spirit with all rivalries set aside at the final whistle.
Great morning of rugby for both Sidcup teams, which I am sure has been reflected in the continuing social media banter between the 2 clubs #imtooldtogetinvolved
